Yellow Cab program ensures city will experience
continued taxi coverage even in the event of local disaster

Austin (April 16, 2008) –  Yellow Cab, Austin’s largest and most modern taxi fleet, has completed development and quality assurance testing of its disaster recovery plan. “Taxicab service is a critical element of Austin’s infrastructure,” said Yellow Cab General Manager Edward Kargbo. “Although we hope we never have to use it, we are now confident that in the event of a disaster – ranging from a devastating situation in our facility (such as a fire), to a citywide act of nature – Yellow Cab will continue to provide service to the independent contractor drivers at our fleet, and the city of Austin will not experience an interruption in taxi service.”

Within two hours of implementing the recovery plan, Yellow Cab Austin taxis will be dispatched from a San Antonio location. Yellow Cab backs up its server each week. The archived data, including trip information, updated maps and addresses, is uploaded to desktop computers at the San Antonio site. These computers are ready to support Austin dispatching at moment’s notice. Initially, staff from a San Antonio taxi company will dispatch the Austin trips until a team from Yellow Cab Austin’s communications department can arrive. Yellow Cab Austin staff will dispatch the Austin calls from San Antonio until the problem is resolved and dispatching from Austin can resume.

To prevent downtime caused by phone service outage, Yellow Cab has internal redundant phone service from both Time Warner and AT&T. If one phone service goes down, customers will still be able to order service via phone without interruption. Customers may also order service via the company’s website.

“Our disaster recovery plan means that, even under extreme circumstances, we can continue to provide service to our customers, the independent contractor drivers, so that they in turn can provide taxi service to the citizens of greater Austin,” said Mr. Kargbo.
